In the past few days, MVRC has taken calls from Mebane, Kinston and Raleigh for veterans who are behind on their rent or mortgages for various reasons.

In Kinston, the veteran and his family are on the verge of eviction because they got behind on their rent.  His disability is being expedited and the landlord said if they can pay him $500 toward their rent, he will hold on the eviction and take the rest of the arrears when his disability check comes in.  Their need was validated by Veterans Challenge in Kinston, who told us that we were the 20th agency they have called because no one in their area has any emergency support funds.  The veteran says he will pay the $500 back when his check comes in, if necessary.

A female vet in Raleigh is behind on rent because her former roommate left her hanging by leaving and not paying her share of the rent.  I believe she needs $800 to cover the arrears.

A disabled (non-military related) veteran and his disabled wife had unexpected expenses that have put them behind nearly $4000 on their mortgage.  We have referred them to legal assistance because we think they are in a bad mortgage situation (11% interest!!), but have also given them information on the NC Foreclosure Prevention Fund.  Not sure if they can be helped, but I am posting the information on the Foreclosure Prevention Fund in case other veterans in similar plight can look into it.

N.C. Foreclosure Prevention Fund  If you have lost your job or are recovering from a temporary financial hardship, such as divorce, a serious illness, or death of a co-owner, find out if you are eligible for help from the N.C. Foreclosure Prevention Fund™ in one of three ways:

1. Contact a housing counselor in a partner agency located near you

2. Call 1-888-623-8631 (Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

3.  On their website, http://www.ncforeclosureprevention.gov/default.aspx , Go to “Am I Eligible,” read eligibility guidelines, and click on “Find Out if You Are Eligible For Help From the N.C. Foreclosure Prevention Fund” and complete the questionnaire. If you are deemed eligible, you will be given the option of applying online or finding a housing counseling organization in your area.

Wounded Warrior Ride from Fayetteville to Raleigh on July 25-28

Wounded warriors will arrive in Fayetteville on Wednesday, July 25 in order to begin cycling at 8 am the next day from the Iron Mike Statue. On the 27th, riders will leave from Cary to the State Capitol in Raleigh at 8:30 am. The public is invited for a community ride on the 28th. There is no cost for wounded warriors to participate.
