House Bill 558 has passed the General Assembly this week. The Bill adds two voting members to the North Carolina Military Affairs Commission to be appointed by the Governor. One of the new members would have to be a current or retired member of the North Carolina National Guard and the other one would have to be a current or retired member of one of a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces. This was an initiative pushed hard by the NCNGA. This will give the NCNGA and other Reserve Components a voice with the NC Military Affairs Commission that is currently not heard as loud as the NCNGA would like to see. I think this is another positive thing for the North Carolina National Guard.
Of the three primary initiatives the NCNGA focused on this session, all have resulted in positive gains:
1 – Tuition Waiver for NCNG Service members (Result: General Assembly did not adopt the measure, but increased the current tuition assistance program appropriation by $200,000)
2 – NCNG and Reserve Component Representatives as a voting member on the NCMAC (Result: Measure was passed, awaiting Governor’s signature)
3 – Increase to the NCNG Pension Plan (Result: Pension plan was increased by $6 to $12 per year, depending on time in service)
The NCNGA will continue to support the NCNG Command on their efforts that are still remaining. Stay tuned for a potential call-to-action on how you can help to support these additional initiatives across the State.
I am certainly proud of what the NCNGA has accomplished over the past two to three years. Many thanks to each of you for your support, and guidance.
Now we need to shift focus to some of our Federal Agenda Items and how we improve things at that level for our Service members and their families. We have a lot of work left to do, and I am going to keep fighting hard for the time I have remaining as the President. Help us keep this momentum by recruiting a friend to join the NCNGA (www.ncnga.org).
Again, many, many thanks go to each of you! You have made this possible for our members and fellow Guards Men and Women.
