Annual Wake County Veterans Stand Down – May 18, 2012 The Stand Down Committee needs help! The Dental Bus has been reserved for this event. However, they need 2 dentists and/or hygienists to volunteer their services on the bus. Do you know of any one that would be willing to volunteer? If so, please have them contact Mr. John Youker at (919) 857-9428 or via email at John.Youker@wakegov.com.

SCAM ALERT: Annoucement from DFAS (http://www.dfas.mil/) on their homepage:

Beware – scam emails – that appear to be sent by DFAS employees! There are emails being sent to individuals, including military members, military retirees, and civilian employees, which appear to be sent by a DFAS employee. Although the email appears to come from a DFAS employee and displays a dot mil address it is actually from a non-government email account. This is an example of what’s called “spoofing.” The emails indicate that individuals who are receiving disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may be able to obtain additional funds from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). These emails are not issued by DFAS and will likely result in a financial loss if you comply with the suggestions in the email. Bottom line – do not send your personal information or copies of your tax returns and 1099s to the individual listed in the email. Go to DFAS website for more info.

April is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. An invitation is extended to attend the Sexual Assault Awareness Month Concert at the Raleigh NCNG JFHQ Auditorium on 20 April 2012 at 1230. 440th Army Rock Band will be performing as well as presentations of key awareness messages. Anyone who wants to attend needs to let let Jeffrey Travers know by 1200 on the 19th so that names are on the roster to be let into the compound. Jeffrey J. Travers, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, NCNG, 919-418-4867

The Rex Hospital Open is an official week-long event on the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Tour, held at TPC Wakefield Plantation in North Raleigh, May 31 - June 3, 2012. By purchasing tickets for this event through Military Missions in Action (MMIA), you are helping to support a local non-profit raise funds that will go towards helping a military veteran with home repairs that he/she would not otherwise be able to afford. Tickets are $10 for the entire four-day event. Children ages 16 and under are admitted for free with an adult who has purchased a ticket. If you are interested in helping support MMIA but are not interested in attending The Open – you can still purchase tickets and donate them back to MMIA; who, in turn, will provide the tickets to local active duty military members and veterans.

The VBA employee (VSR) working that case has 5 business days to respond with a real answer on claims and other processing within the VBA. The person answering the 800#, cannot always see what is really happening during the adjudication process and may not always be able to give the most accurate information. Plus if there is a delay in the processing, it does bring that particular claim back to the attention of the VSR and can make a difference on the time it takes to resolve. The Veteran decides on how the VARO contacts them, via mail, email or phone call.
